Believe it or not, pancakes are a pretty big part of an American breakfast. Oh, you already knew that? Well, at least that’s been established. At Bread and Porridge pancakes are a big deal here as well. They are one of our most popular menu items, partly because we do them so well, but also because they are a true morning staple in so many households around the U.S.
Throughout the history of pancakes in America, you might be surprised to know that, according to world-foodhistory.com, initially it was yet another food taught to the American colonial settlers by the local Native American people, making “griddle cakes” using Rhode Island Narragansett maize. That’s right, you may want to pay homage to the pancake at your next Thanksgiving!
Needless to say, the griddle cakes stuck around to become an American staple food. George Washington is said to have eaten them with, you guessed it, maple syrup! According to theplate.nationalgeographic.com, Thomas Jefferson, a fond lover of pancakes, is reported as having passed on a recipe from his French maitre d’hotel, Etienne Lemaire, of his “panne quaiques” which were basically what we would consider to be crepes.
As you can see, at Bread and Porridge, we appreciate a tidbit of history here and there! We just love that pancakes have such a rainbow of history, textures and flavors! Our pancakes are the usual American light and fluffy sort – But you can bet your britches we don’t leave our pancakes out to dry with no tasty accompaniments. Here are some of our Bread and Porridge menu favorites for the historically awesome Pancake!
First off, we do buttermilk pancakes which tend to make for a fluffier and tastier pancake due to the tang and thick, richness of buttermilk. Some of our most popular flavors start off with our plump Blueberry Pancake – who can resist the deep purplish color with that classic blueberry flavor embedded into a thick and fluffy buttermilk pancake?! Another, of course, is Strawberry. So sweet and succulent with the pop of vibrant bright red throughout. Banana is another menu favorite. There’s a true unique texture combo formed from the density of the banana, coupled with the fluffiness of the buttermilk pancake… Truly so delicious! All of these options can come with Pecans within the pancake (or on top) for an added crunch.
Toppings are another YES factor! Add strawberries, blueberries, bananas, pecans, Nutella or vanilla bean whipped cream for an added indulgence to really ramp up your usual flap jack! The combinations are almost endless! Just imagine a Strawberry Pancake with Nutella drizzled all over, add to that blueberries and bananas on top with just a touch of vanilla bean whipped cream?! I’m literally salivating and calling in MY order right now!
At Bread and Porridge your creativity can really shine, all the way into your tummy. We just can’t wait to see what Pancake combination you come up with when visiting us in the heart of Santa Monica’s vibrant beach neighborhood scene!
