The key to a healthy, well balanced breakfast is to have appropriate portions and the right types of food. According to Dietitians Nationwide, the average American meal size is twice, sometimes even triple the recommended portion and also usually doesn’t include a proper ratio of fat vs. carb vs. fruit/ vegetables.

Research suggests that protein helps you feel more full for longer so it is recommended that a healthy breakfast consist of lean protein, such as eggs, tofu, nut butters or lean meats (chicken, turkey or ham). Along with that, a whole grain or starchy vegetable such as whole wheat toast, oats or small potato, and a low fat dairy such as milk, yogurt or cottage cheese. Vegetables are a great morning addition, valued for their vitamins and trace minerals, as well as Berries due to their high amount of extremely beneficial antioxidants and low sugar content.
